Before there was BOS, there was a tenacious, near-zealous determination to build DeFI for Bitcoin. Rather than forfeiting to build on more conventional smart contract chains, the early builders of BOS worked alongside Sovryn to build—at the time—Bitcoin’s biggest DeFi application on the Rootstock sidechain.
There was still no way to establish trustless bridging, but in October 2023, Robin Linus published the BitVM whitepaper, providing the foundation for BitSNARK, BOS’ core technology. In July 2024, BOS used BitSNARK to verify the first ZK-proof on Bitcoin at block number 853626, changing everything.
